The term “hentai” comes from Japanese and means something like perversion or abnormality. It stands for all pornographic anime and manga from Japan.
As with traditional pornography, there are several subcategories of hentai. The most polarizing of these are “lolicon/shotacon” (underage girl/boy sex with adults) and “ero guro” (grotesque and gory erotica).
The birth of hentai is considered to be the painting “The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife” by the Japanese painter Hokusai in 1814, which shows sexual intercourse between a woman and two ink fish.
