Kigurumi is a form of cosplay in which a full-body suit similar to a mascot costume is worn to achieve a real-world restoration of a cartoon or anime character. Unlike cosplay, the performer’s face will be completely wrapped in a mask, and the costume worn will also cover the entire body, so that the performer can completely hide his or her original identity and completely become the character to be played. In the early years, Kigurumi only appeared in the stage show, but in recent years it has gradually become a mode of cosplayers. In Japan, this form of role-playing is also known as anime (Chinese: 動漫顏), but there have always been only a small number of players participating in it. After about 2005, Kigurumi slowly became popular in various countries and regions, including China, and even the United States, Canada, and Europe.
As with other forms of cosplay, many Kigurumi players choose to play as humanoid female anime or game characters, but others are happy to play as their own characters.
